Google’s Nexus One and Motorola’s Droid have enabled multi-touch for months now, but they fare far worse than the iPhone in this regard. The main reason for the sub-par multi-touch performance of the Nexus One and the Droid is that they both use Synaptics ClearPad 2000 sensors that are not designed for multi-touch. Reviewers are thrilled with the Droid Incredible’s multi-touch accuracy and with good reason –reportedly, HTC has incorporated true multi-touch sensors from Atmel for the Droid Incredible and the incoming Sprint Evo 4G. The higher ups at Sprint are supposedly throwing around June 13th (and June 6th) as the date that the world’s first WiMAX smartphone, the HTC Evo 4G, will become available. Meanwhile, hearsay on Android Forums indicate that Verizon’s HTC Incredible is scheduled for launch on April 25th and will be stocked by Best Buy, while Android and Me is reporting April 29th. After a lackluster start to the new year, HTC is hoping that a robust Q2 will propel the company to a resurgent finish to 2010. HTC had expected Q1 revenues to be lower than the previous quarter, but with the eagerly anticipated releases of the Desire, the Legend, and other unconfirmed Android smartphones in the spring and down the line, business should be bustling from here onwards. HTC has been one of the fastest growing technology companies over the past three years, yet much of the public in the western world knows little about this Taiwanese firm. As 2010 moves along, HTC’s relative obscurity will be replaced by recognition and acclaim. Formerly just an original design manufacturer (ODM), which supplied handheld devices like PDAs and smartphones to big name clients, HTC officially launched its own branded smartphone in 2006 with the Blackberry-like Excalibur. In 2007, HTC released its preemptive counter to the iPhone, the Touch (Windows Mobile 6), which was generally criticized for its poor TouchFLO UI, mediocre screen, and lack of 3G.
