On Monday, LG released its InTouch Max GW620 (which is the same Eve out in Canada since fall 2009). Motorola has announced that the first South Korean Android 2.0 smartphone, the Motoroi will be available in February, with a planned American launch one month afterwards. Let me get this straight, just in case there is any confusion: Android 1.6 came out on September 15th, 2.0 on October 26th, so why is my Android powered smartphone still stuck on version 1.5 or 1.6? Google’s open source Android project arrived with the promise that it would be free and completely open to everyone. In a move that greatly dismays Microsoft, LG has announced that of the 20 phones it plans to introduce in 2010, a majority of them will be powered by Android, with only a few running Windows Mobile. In September, when LG launched its first Android phone, the Eve (Canadian exclusive), the company stated that it would release at least “13 new smartphones over the next 16 months that utilize Microsoft’s Windows Mobile.” More »

HTC has been one of the fastest growing technology companies over the past three years, yet much of the public in the western world knows little about this Taiwanese firm. As 2010 moves along, HTC’s relative obscurity will be replaced by recognition and acclaim. Formerly just an original design manufacturer (ODM), which supplied handheld devices like PDAs and smartphones to big name clients, HTC officially launched its own branded smartphone in 2006 with the Blackberry-like Excalibur. In 2007, HTC released its preemptive counter to the iPhone, the Touch (Windows Mobile 6), which was generally criticized for its poor TouchFLO UI, mediocre screen, and lack of 3G.
