From Ziggytek: Google co-founder Larry Page accuses Steve Jobs of “rewriting history” when the Apple CEO says that Google followed Apple into the smartphone market. Page insists that Google had been developing phones long before Apple unveiled the iPhone in 2007. Although Google did buy out a small firm called Android a few years prior to the 1st generation iPhone launch, early prototypes of Android shown in late 2007 were reminiscent of BlackBerrys. More »

HTC has confirmed that the Droid Incredible, Evo 4G, MyTouch Slide, and Desire are on the priority list to receive Android 2.2 updates, but none of them is getting the new OS until the second half of this year. Although HTC has not made a statement about 2009 models, the adverb that “most” 2010 units will get FroYo indicates to me that there is no chance for the likes of the G1, MyTouch 3G, and Droid Eris since not “all” 2010 smartphones will be upgraded. Adobe’s MWC appearance revealed something big: only smartphones with ARM Cortex-A8 or faster processors will run Flash 10.1 properly. Also, 50Mb of free RAM is required, but all current Android devices have this covered; unfortunately, in North America, only the Nexus One and Motorola Droid have the CPU requirements, so this means that the HTC Magic (myTouch), Dream (G1), Hero, Motorola CLIQ, and other top selling Android phones will not be supported. The programming geniuses over at OpenEclair have come a long way since the first version of its open source Eclair 2.1 ROM was released on January 28th. Now in build 1.2.2, OpenEclair is generally regarded as the best, fastest (and certainly the most promising) Android 2.1 ROM for the HTC Magic and Dream (myTouch 3G and G1 respectively). All of these exploits are courtesy of hobbyist hackers who seemingly care more about their smartphones than the carriers that sell them. A few days ago, Cyanogen released his ROM for the newly rooted Nexus One, adding multi-touch to Browser. Although no other application works with multi-touch yet, Cyanogen vows to implement the highly coveted feature to the rest of Android. Also, HTC Magic (myTouch 3G) and Dream (G1) owners might be happy to know that their phones can currently run hacked versions of Android 2.1 thanks to Manup456, whose Eclair ROM installs on the aforementioned models and functions nearly flawlessly.
