According to Lookout Mobile Security, Android.Counterclank is just an aggressive ad network, not a malware like Symantec has claimed. Symantec is still warning users about this adware, as it can receive commands from remote servers to steal information from infected devices.
The researchers at Lookout argue that these claims by Symantec were ‘overblown,’ as there’s no evidence of any ‘malicious’ behavior. The Apperhand code package that is included in all 13 affected apps only places search icons on the home screen and pushes ads onto the notifications bar. Furthermore, considering that Google did not remove all of the 13 apps from the Android Market, this content is probably not classified as a ‘malware’ according to Google’s definition.
What do you think? Is Android.Counterclank a malware or simply an adware?
