Android developers offer another Siri contender — say hello to Evi!
Evi is an artificial intelligence voice app much like Apple’s Siri. The new app uses some of the same algorithms and data sources as Siri, giving some impressive results using Android’s native voice search and text-to-speech engines. The features include voice or text input and search for local information for UK and USA. The app gathers information from broad Google searches, GPS, Google Maps, Wolfram Alpha and all sorts of other places, giving a contextual answer with links and photos when appropriate. Evi uses Nuance’s voice recognition and natural language engine. In addition, you can vote up or down on answers Pandora-style to help improve Evi’s effectiveness for you and other users.
Evi is currently in the beta stage and users already had a lot of great things to say. Users reported that the voice recognition was fast and accurate. However, many who tried the app had faces server issues. Although Evi recognized the user’s voice quickly, the app failed to connect with the servers and in order to answer questions.
Though still not ridden of errors, this Siri-like Android app possesses great potential. To all Android users, try Evi out. It is available for free download in the Android market.
