Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, after reading the gist of what Republic Wireless is doing, it’s not so crazy after all.
Wanting to be the ones to start a revolution in the mobile world, Republic Wireless has come up with an alternative plan for those who are sick of trying to pay the upkeep, which can go to about $100/month after all the data and text plan add-ons, to keep their Android smartphone connected in a more efficient way that won’t make your bank account cry.
Offering unlimited talk, text, and data - did I mention contract-free? - at a very appealing $20 a month, Republic Wireless is bringing one intriguing plan that certainly has my ears perked.
So the way it works is that the company (who is part of Bandwidth.com) uses Android smartphones that they’ve equipped with a specific technology that is comparable to UMA. It’s similar to the services that allow you to make a call over a wi-fi network. When you’re out of that range, the phone ends up using traditional cell phone towers via Sprint and uses minutes that RW buys in bulk from them.
So for the most part, it’s like you’ll be using your phone over wi-fi, so it won’t be sporting any 4G speeds, though you do have the option to use up as much uncapped data as you’d like and have a lower cell phone bill than you would think with all these features.
Phone models that will be offered haven’t been mentioned yet, but I’m sure that’ll all chance since the service is officially launching tomorrow, November 8.
Thoughts? Would you trade in your current phone plan for a new smartphone on Republic Wireless and a $20 monthly bill?
