52% to be exact. According to a new report from ABI research, for all of the smartphones sold in Asia, 52% of them are actually running Android. An impressive statistic, especially when Android only holds 43% of the smartphone market in the US.
Though in considering the growth of Android in Asia, Android has really gained a lot of love from them. In the course of a year, the OS has gained 36% of the market share. But the potential of how much more it could grow is still pretty new and that’s why it’s currently thought of more as an emerging market. With only 27% of mobile phones sold in Asia qualifying as smartphones, it’s a bit difference when you compare it to the 40% for the US.
Much of the Android love seems to come from China, since it is known for their open-source nature, something that allows small and large manufacturers alike to create Android phones without paying a licensing fee. Add that to how two of the largest manufacturers of Android phones, Samsung and HTC, are based in South Korea and Taiwan, respectively.
Over the next few years, Asia is set to be a significant part of the smartphone market, especially going on the prediction from analysts that it could even double in just the next five years. It’ll be interesting to see how things play out and if Android will continue the success that it has been experiencing.
