Nielsen, a market research firm, recently completed a study that reveals 20 of the most popular Android apps in the US. Broken down into overall, male, and female, unsurprisingly, the Android Market took the top spot in all three.

Though having the Android Market in the top spot is almost a given, so second place gives a better indicator of which apps were actually popular among the US masses.

For men, despite the argument that they hate asking for directions, it was surprising to see that Google Maps was the most used. It also placed second for most used on the overall scale as well.

For females, Facebook was the winner, which is pretty understandable, seeing as it is one of the most popular social networking sites.

Gmail rounded up third place on all three charts.

Any results that surprised you? Which Android apps do you use the most?
