Android 2.2 aka Froyo is slowly making its way to smartphones, and phone companies are busy making that happen. Motorola not too long ago updated Android 2.2 upgrade schedule, and it did not include the following phones: the Cliq XT, Motorola i1, Flipout, and Charm. They unfortunately will not be able to get the Froyo upgrade.
So what does that mean? The Flipout and Charm will remain on Android 2.1 aka Eclair, while the Cliq XT and i1 will be stuck on the Android 1.5 (ouch). According to a Motorola employee, engineers “worked for months” to upgrade the Cliq XT. But the software “could not meet the basic performance standards required.”
Motorola stated, “We even took the unprecedented step of investigating the benefits of code provided by the independent developer community to try to improve XT performance. In the end, we were not able to develop a version … that would deliver an optimal customer experience.”
It’s sad to hear about this because those own one of the four phones will not be happy campers. I suggest you change to a different one that is capable of getting future Android upgrades.
