Kai-Fu Lee, the former Google China president, announced in the Wall Street Journal that he will launch a whole new mobile OS based on Android, known as “Tapas.” The project is funded by Innovation Works, Lee’s own company and will target the Chinese audience.
To pep it up, being ready for the Chinese users’ interests, Android still has a long way to go, according to Lee. That’s why Tapas will offer a number of features that are catered to Chinese standards. For example, it will be integrated with Chinese social networks as well as detecting the origin of incoming calls. There’s also a music service that goes out to the internet to obtain lyrics for songs that are currently being listened to. Sure good to go for the Asian karaoke-trend.
The first handsets running Tapas are expected to hit the market in the coming weeks. I’m sure curious to see how this project pans out!
