Mountain View, California-based Google has officially rolled out a new Android app at its Mobile Press Event in San Francisco, California. This new feature is called Voice Actions for Android which you can guess by its name enables you to control your phone using spoken commands. Sounds awesome, doesn’t it? And it definitely is!
Voice Actions for Android lets you call businesses and contacts, send text and email, listen to music, browse the web and complete other common tasks with just the power of your voice.
According to the details, there are a total of ten new voice command features which you can execute using this new feature:
• send text to [contact] [message]
• listen to [artist/song/album]
• call [business]
• call [contact]
• send email to [contact] [message]
• go to [website]
• note to self [note]
• navigate to [location/business name]
• directions to [location/business name]
• map of [location]
It may sound complicated but truth is, it is all fairly simple to activate. For example, sending a text message by voice is as simple as saying “send text to [contact] [message]” and the same goes for listening to music, which is as simple as saying “listen to” and then naming an artist/song or album.
Take a look at the video yourself to see how Voice Actions for Android works:
However, the disappointing part of the news is that Voice Actions for Android and the new Google Search widget for Android runs onAndroid 2.2 (Froyo), which unfortunately means that at this point only a small amount of Android users will be able to make use of these new features.
But for those who pick up a Droid 2 phone from Motorola and Verizon, these features will come pre-loaded. While the rest of you with Android phones running on Android 2.2 will have to manually update the following Android apps – Google Search by Voice,Google Search and Voice Command as well as other related apps on our Android phones to get these features running.
Right now, Voice Actions for Android is only available in English, but the voice search capability can now also support Italian, Spanish, Japanese, and French. You can download this new app now on your Android 2.2 device right here.
What do you think of the new Voice Actions for Android?
