Apple’s iPhone 4 launch will go down as the biggest in cell phone history. Pre-orders topped 600,000 on day one, and to date, Apple has probably sold well over a million units. However, Android smartphone sales are steady and increasing. In fact, 2 Android phones are sold every second of the day.
Last month, before the iPhone 4’s arrival, in the States, Android accounted for 28% smartphone sales, with BlackBerry grabbing 36%, and the iPhone taking 21%. Of course, June will be a complete turnaround, with Apple dominating and Android surpassing BlackBerry.
Android’s surge towards the top can be credited to the sheer number of choices that consumers have. Successes like the HTC Evo 4G, Droid Incredible, Motorola Droid, and so forth have established Android as a formidable competitor to RIM and Apple. Important upcoming launches - Droid X, Droid 2, Samsung Galaxy S Pro, Vibrant, Captivate, etc. - should keep Android on pace with the iPhone 4 into the fourth quarter of ‘10.
