As AT&T customers angrily know, their carrier cripples their phones, and the HTC Aria is no exception. Well, eugene373 (unofficial HTC rooting guru) has applied the same HTC MyTouch 3G Slide hack on the Aria. Also, Sony’s once promising Xperia X10 has also been rooted, but instructions for the procedure are pending.

I am not alone in desiring the X10’s hardware potential but despising its Android 1.6 that is old and sometimes sluggish (unacceptable for a 1GHz phone). Sony will eventually update the X10 to FroYo…in Q4! Today’s news that the Xperia has been cracked is music to the ears of those who have the phone and wish to run FroYo or even Eclair on it before lakes above the equator freeze over.

As for rooting the Aria and sticking it to AT&T’s draconian practices, see here.
