An unofficial Android 2.2 FroYo ROM can now be installed on the Motorola Droid. Wi-Fi does not work because it has been disabled. Everything else should be functional, but some users have reported minor issues.

If you want a video tutorial to go with the written instructions from My Droid World (download all of the files from there), then watch the clip above. Personally, I would require wireless with the Droid because with that screen, I would use it for lots of web surfing, and I am definitely not paying my carrier for that privilege.
