LG’s newest Android 1.6 smartphone, the Optimus GT540, launched on Saturday in the UK and is powered by old hardware, but that is OK because it is not intended for geeks, but for newbies looking to dabble into smartphones.

All of the Optimus’ specifications seem to be from mid-2009, when Android devices debuted. The GT540’s 3″ 480×320 resistive touchscreen, 3-megapixel camera, wireless, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS, and Android 1.6 OS were bottom-line features…in December of 2009! Normally, these lower-end phones make their ways over to Eastern Europe, China, and India, not an advanced civilization like the United Kingdom, but LG does not believe that “early smartphone users” will carp about the Optimus not being cutting-edge.
