BumpTop is software that morphs Windows and Mac OS X desktops into interactive 3D interfaces –it is almost like having a real desktop on your computer. Google has bought out the small group, and the likelihood is that Android and ChromeOS home-screens will soon be in 3D too.

Many elements of BumpTop is lovable, such as stacking, automatically enlarging files and folders, and the layout, but I find that the OS X version uses a smidgen too much CPU resources (increasing the internal temperatures by 2-5 degrees) for my liking. On an iMac, Mac Pro, or tower computer, this is not an issue at all. For smartphones, netbooks, and tablets, BumpTop will need to be optimized if it is to run nicely without siphoning large amounts of battery life.
