Google has finally released Google Earth for Android 2.1 phones, of which there is only one at the moment. The 22Mb application runs very smoothly on the Nexus One and looks nearly as good as its computer counterpart.
Pinch-to-zoom works, and the app loads rather quickly too, thanks to the Nexus One’s Snapdragon. I would not expect older processors to be spectacular with Google Earth, but once other fast 2.1 smartphones like the HTC Desire, Acer Liquid, Sony Xperia X10, and Samsung M100S (along with the Droid’s eventual update to 2.1) arrive, Android owners will finally have this most practical and fun application on their handhelds. The iPhone has met its match in this area.
