The programming geniuses over at OpenEclair have come a long way since the first version of its open source Eclair 2.1 ROM was released on January 28th. Now in build 1.2.2, OpenEclair is generally regarded as the best, fastest (and certainly the most promising) Android 2.1 ROM for the HTC Magic and Dream (myTouch 3G and G1 respectively). Check out the videos below to see how well the ROM runs on a Dream (G1).
While carriers and manufacturers sluggishly bring their over-the-air updates for their Android smartphones still running 1.6 or lower, the open source community has been busy releasing customized ROMs for users who do not want to wait until late spring or even summer for version 2.1. OpenEclair is still in its early stages, but it is already one of the fastest and stablest 2.1 ROMs out there, and unlike most ROMs, this one is being developed by multiple parties, ensuring constant progress and updates. Unfortunately, OpenEclair is only for the Dream (G1) and Magic (myTouch), two very popular handhelds.
As the videos demonstrate, 1.2.2 is speedy even on an older and slower device.
