Archos has been making tablets as media players/web browsing devices for sometime, well before Apple’s iPad. Last year’s Archos 5 shipped with Android 1.5 and was not well reviewed. Critics were not fond with its plasticky screen, which did not have multi-touch, and the 5’s instability and UI jerkiness. Now, Archos is soon to release its bigger Android tablet, the Archos 7.

While the 7’s preliminary specs information is limited, we do know a few things. For a 7″ screen, the resolution could have been higher than the same number of pixels found on the 3.7″ Nexus One. A lower DPI could improve touch performance though, but we will see if Archos has implemented good multi-touch. Crucially, there is nothing confirmed regarding which version of Android it will use. Everyone will be quite displeased if the 7 ships with outdated Cupcake. I suspect that nothing short of an optimized 1.6 is acceptable.

The base 8Gb is rumored to be available in March for £150. Everyone is hoping for the CPU to be a Snapdragon or at least something faster than the ARM A8 800MHz in the Archos 5. At £150, the A7 might steal some of the iPad’s thunder, especially in Europe, where the Apple tax is ridiculous.
