Moving forward, Android will require not merely continued app support but also gaming, which makes up a large portion of Apple’s App Store profits. Google is taking a more concerted effort to focus on games. By partnering with Game Developers Conference, Google hopes to bring Android to gamers and vice versa.

The GDC is the largest gathering of professional game developers in the world. In March, Google will present its Android platform for programmers by giving away Nexus One and Motorola Droid smartphones to qualifying registrants.

Google’s Android is not just for smartphones, but being open source, it can also be a viable operating system for tablets, netbooks, and e-readers. In 2010, the number of different devices that use Android should increase. However, if Google wants its OS to compete with Apple’s, the touchscreens on manufacturer devices must improve. Controls are everything in games, and Apple’s multi-touch iPhone display has the best in the business.
