Yet another smashing overseas smartphone, the Acer Liquid was supposed to be the world’s first “Snapdragon” processor device, but its launch had been delayed until last week. The Liquid has quality specs and its black variant is now for sale in the UK, with most of western Europe, Russia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Indonesia also getting theirs sometime this year. I question just how well this phone will do since the technically more advanced Nexus One has made barely a ripple.

I am sure that Acer will be doing significantly more advertising for its smartphone than Google. In many ways, I find the Liquid more visually appealing than the Nexus One, but the prices are about the same (£330), and the Google version has much better specs and runs the latest Android 2.1:
Android 1.6
3.5-inch WVGA LCD
Qualcomm 8250 768 MHz
ROM: 512MB, RAM: 256MB
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
Bluetooth 2.0
Internal GPS antenna
Wi-Fi: IEEE 802.11 b/g
3.5 mm audio jack
microSDHC
5.0 MP Camera with Auto Focus
1350mAh Rechargeable Lithium-ion battery with Talk Time: Up to 300 minutes, Standby Time: Up to 400 hours
115 x 62.5 x 12.5 mm
Weight: 135 grams with battery
If this pretty Acer easily outsells the Nexus One, then we know that its triumph is 90% attributable to marketing. I agree with Eletricpig’s review that we should not have to wait until “later this year” (Acer’s quote regarding Android 2.0) for the newest version of the OS when the Liquid became available at roughly the same time as the Nexus One.
